TIPS to preserving your turkey for mounting:
You worked hard to harvest your turkey! Here are some steps you can take to keep your bird in optimal condition for the taxidermist.
- Do not dress the bird. Leave that for the taxidermist.
- Keep the plumage as dry and clean as possible. Carry cotton balls or paper towels with you and stuff into the cavities (yes, both ends, and any entry and exit wounds), in order to keep body fluids or blood from soiling the bird’s feathers
- Prevent feather loss and damage by carrying panty hose or a large plastic bag to preserve your bird. Be sure not to bend the tail feathers and to collect any loose feathers that you find around the bird post-kill.
- Keep your bird cool. Carry a large cooler with you during your hunt if you know that you will not be able to get to the taxidermist for several hours or more. Anything longer than that, you may even want to consider freezing.
